There
are certain industries that are much more competitive than
others. For example the Real Estate Web sites or even the SEO
industry itself, is a good example. Nearly every search engine
marketing firm wants to be number one for their targeted keyword
phrase on Google, MSN, Yahoo and all of the major search
engines. The question is, how can the average Webmaster learn to
compete in these areas where there are millions upon millions of
competing pages.
I'll
pause to share a quick story that our Pastor shared in Church
last Sunday. It seems there were two men competing in a log
chopping contest. Two of the very best loggers were up against
each other in a competition to see who could chop the most logs
the quickest.
Logger
#1:
The first logger was strong and had a perfect swing and was
known for his endurance.
Logger #2:
The
second logger was also very well suited physically for the
challenge, but seemed to have an alternative secret to winning
contests.
The
Contest begins:
The first logger strives for even, consistent
swings to the wood, but at a steady pace. Most noticeably was
the fact that this first logger did not stop to rest at all
during the entire competition. However, the second logger was
quite impressive too, and labored at chopping those logs with a
short break every once in a while where he would sit down and
seemingly rest. The contest went on for some time, but finally
ended with only one winner. The winner as it turns out, was the
second logger who seemed to have the habit of resting in between
chopping sessions.
The first logger
being puzzled by how he had been beaten by the second logger,
decided to ask the first logger, "I just don't understand
how you possibly could beat me in this competition? It seems
like every few minutes when I glanced your way, you were sitting
down taking a rest. How on earth did you manage to cut more logs
than me, by resting every few minutes while I worked at it
steady for the entire duration" he asked? The second logger
replied with a gleam in his eye, "Actually you probably did
not notice, but at the same time I was resting, I was also
sharpening my axe."
The Truth Behind
Staying on Top of the Competition:
Okay, so there some truth to this story that holds especially
true for competing in search engine skills too. It's not just
about how you are doing right now. Perhaps you are doing
extremely well in your rankings. But no matter how well you are
doing right now in the rankings or how efficient you feel your
optimization work may be, there is always wisdom in giving
yourself a little sharper cutting edge. The SEO industry is
continually changing and we have to change with it.
There is also something to be said for taking a little break or
having a rest once in a while to renew your mind and your
skills. Of course in the SEO industry, your axe is really your
SEO skill set or shall we say your understanding of how search
engines are working.
Could you use a
little rest? You might feel like you cannot afford to take a
rest. These days, everyone feels like they are so driven. It
nearly may feel like resting may be out of the question. Like
the first logger, who put all of his effort into endurance only
to be beaten by another competitor, who knew that both the mind
and body can truly benefit by a little rest at the right time.
This is especially true, if you are using that rest period to
put a razor sharp, fresh, cutting edge on your working tools (in
our case, our SEO skills).
Here are few reasons
